DAF Trucks Latest ‘Green Logistics’ Innovation

DAF is one of the most well-known industry leaders for producing and distributing HGV trucks across Europe. They strive for innovation, sustainability, and efficiency, which makes them a key pioneer for future HGV creations. For truck drivers, they are the most recognised and loved brand, and they own a truck assembly facility in Leyland, which is DAF’s most advanced facility, producing DAF truck supplies to distribute to Europe and worldwide.

Due to inventions for cleaner alternatives being pioneered, ‘green logistics’ are becoming more attainable for HGV businesses and numerous companies are now striving towards a greener route. DAF has recently announced their latest ‘green logistics’ innovation – a steered pusher axle for new generation 6×2 tractors and rigids. They have made use of new technology for hydraulic systems to create an electric hydraulic steering system which not only is better for the environment, but can hold higher payloads, has a lighter axle weight, and a 0.3% gain in fuel efficiency. The steering arms and auxiliary drop arm are replaced by an electronically-controlled steering pump unit, and the electric steering system calculates optimal steering which allows for precise, smooth steering – a trucker’s dream!

This innovation is yet another great technological development for the HGV industry, and we will hopefully start to see these improvements implemented in all trucks worldwide very soon. This year we expect to see more developments for HGVs as the government’s ‘Net Zero’ scheme is entering its ‘transition phase’ with companies having to disclose their proposal climate transition plans from 2023. The scheme plans to reduce carbon emissions by 80% for the 2050 deadline and plans for the HGV/LGV and logistics industry will introduce sales of new non-zero emission HGVs to replace the manufacturing of older HGVs that don’t align with this scheme.

If you’re looking to start implementing changes to make your truck fuel efficient and ready in time for the Net Zero scheme, here are some quick tips to help you get started:

  • Getting a good pair of wind deflectors mounted onto your cab can lead to better aerodynamics as they are placed at the sides which ‘deflects’ the wind. These can help you to use less fuel as there’s less wind resistance and is therefore fuel efficient.
  • Minimize your rolling resistance by ensuring your wheels are aligned properly, and your axle has secure components so that it isn’t dragging on the road. Misaligned axles can happen from worn studs, nuts, or bearings. High quality axle components are available on our site for the DAF brand, including Leyland DAF, and more.

If you possess a new diesel truck, then you’re already reducing harmful emissions by using the required AdBlue fuel. AdBlue helps with fuel efficiency as it consumes less fuel, and it also adheres to government regulations in accordance with the Net Zero requirements – you can read more about the facts and benefits of AdBlue on our blog post.
