MAN was started by 2 mean, Ludwig Sander and Jean Gaspard Dolfus and named the company “Sandlers Machine Shop”. This machine shop was based in Augsburg in 1840.
In 1914 they start to produce commercial vehicles in a small plant in Lindau. The plant was known as M.A.N – Saurer truck works. Only a year later though the truck production was relocated to Nuremberg. In 1924 MAN introduced the worlds 1st fuel injected diesel engine along with a completely new design of bus construction. Which was built on a low-frame chassis.
MAN then built another first in 1930, the 3 axle trolley bus. It was the by far the most power commercial vehicle in the world at the time due to having 140/150 HP. Power wise this truck was untouchable.
Like everyone over the period between 1939 and 1944 MAN was affected massively by the World war going on. Nuremberg plants targeted on many occasions, but they did their best to get through. Not only did they produce army vehicles during this time they also carried on producing civilian vehicles as well which wasn’t common within the industry during this period. Although by the end of the war in 1944 production machinery had been decimated.
11 years on in 1955 MAN moved to a bigger plant in Munich. This due to the growing popularity of the man commercial vehicles which ranged from, Tractors to buses and trucks. The very first truck to come off the production line in Munich was a 515 L1 on the 15th of November 1955.
Another decade passed and another milestone was hit. 1955 the 100,000th the truck that became a poster for this decade was the Hauber and cab over engine vehicle known as the “paulsbacke”.
MAN grew significantly over the next 15 years and at the start of the 70’s took over “Bussing” this is how the lion became a feature on MAN trucks. This led to MAN producing the 1978 truck of the year, the 19.280. Many more awards followed. With the take over in 1971 MAN got the Bussing plant in Salzgitter. This plant produced the Lion’s star FRH 442 in 1992 which won coach of the year in 1994.
The millennium came about, MAN began setting new standards in the heavy-duty truck sector with the new model TGA. In 2001 this series of truck was awarded truck of the year and then won the “if product design award” They also took over Neoplan in the year 2001. Two new MAN models got introduced in 2005, the TGL and TGM. They also introduced a new era of engines with the ground-breaking Common Rail systems and MAN Hydro Drive switchable all wheel drives. Then just to top the year off the bus sector was awarded Bus of the year for the MAN lions city.
2007- MAN releases 2 new heavy-duty truck models the TGX and TGS. The V8 options on these models was the most powerful truck in Europe with 680 HP. With these models MAN again won another truck of the year accolade. The euro 6 was then introduced in the year 2012 with its new exhaust gas technology. From then to now MAN have grown and remain one of the most popular truck bus and van production companies in the world.
