Scania was founded in the late 1800’s. The produced the first completely Swedish built car in 1897 and after buying a bicycle come in the year 1900, they oddly went on the build the first scania truck in 1902 which could carry 1.5 tonnes of cargo and reach a sped of 12 kmph.

The first industrial engine they built was supplied to a fire service in Stockholm to be installed in a water pump. Scania fully delved into commercial vehicles between 1910 and 1920 with their first bus and fire truck. After the first world war in 1921 Scania struggled financially and it wasn’t until 1935 when they stopped showing losses after this they seemed to never stop growing and revolutionising the industry for example, in 1939 they produced the very first engine to use standardised components, this engine was named the “royal”.

In 1951 Scania claim to be the first diesel engine makers to apply turbo technology in serial production, offering their customers at the time a super charged version of the 11.3 lutre inline D810 engine for industrial and marine use. Fast forward 51 years to 2000 and the 1,000,000th vehicle leaves the factory in Zwolle.

In the coming years they would bring in fresh new models one of which being the R-Series launched in 2004. This was the start if an era with a clearer identity for the different cab models. Scania’s focus on this new truck range was to create an even better environment for the driver and provide an even better earning power for the owner. The R-series (Big forward-control cab) is followed by the P-series a smaller forward control cab and then the T series which is bonneted. With the launch of the R-series the T model’s production was halted in 2005.

The T models sales had declined over the 10 years, and it became obvious that producing this model was not financially feasible. 2011 was the introduction of the complete Euro 6 range 6 cylinder 13-litre engines producing 440 to 480Hp. This vastly improved Scania’s market share and an increasing reputation for sustainable innovation.

Scania launched a “new generation” of trucks in 2016. Th range of long haulage trucks featuring a brand-new modular cab range. The R-series now sports a high mounted cab with extremely driver friendly accommodation. In addition to the models carried over and improved they added a completely new model, the S-series. It has a flat floor replacing the former top line, creating more space and comfort. The environment for the driver set a new industry standard. They also considered driver visibility by improving the positioning of the drivers with the dashboard and mirrors. The last of the new generation was the XT range, that came in 2017. This model was set its own colour scheme and it is definitely a sight to behold for trucking enthusiasts.
