Here’s a bit of history on how Volvo Trucks became the powerhouse that it is today.
Volvo began operations in 1926 in the hope to be producing cars by April 1927. Soon after April 1927 Volvo realised the demand for a Swedish car in Sweden was low. Luckily, they already has plans and designs in place for a medium duty truck named, Series 1. In February 1928 the very first Volvo truck came off the production line and left the Volvo truck spares factory. Unexpectedly this truck was a success, especially in contrast to Volvo cars. After a very successful launch, selling out the series 1 fast Volvo decided to create a series 2 model.
By the mid 1930’s Volvo became the most prominent name in the market among the Scandinavian countries. In the 40’s world war 2 had a big impact on sales within the private sector, but the sales to the Swedish army of advanced cross country vehicles covered all loses and in fact boosted profits in this period.
The 1950’s was a huge decade for the development of trucks perhaps the most influential decade even the designs changed very little. Petrol engines and diesel engines were replaced by efficient direct-injection diesel engines. Volvo pioneered the turbocharged engine. Then sleeper cabs along with power steering where introduced which made life a lot easier for drivers and companies in different senses. Drivers now having comfort and ease, companies now able to send their drivers on longer trips at less cost. Now in the 60’s we finally realise the easiest way of transporting goods is via Truck.
Not only was this dues to the developments in the 50’s but also the fact an international road structure was put into place that made it fast, safer and easier to transport good via truck. In this decade the drivers got more comfort with the cabs being fitted with rubber suspension systems, they got the benefits of having sprung seats and the new height of the F/COE-cabs gave more visibility.
Over the next 50 years everything got bigger, stronger and more powerful. Trucks became faster whilst being able to carry more weight at the same time. Cabs got bigger and more comfortable and easier to drive. By the time we hit 2010 Volvo was one of the most popular trucks in the word and a leader in new technology in the haulage industry.
They introduced a new FH series which would have all the eye of the truck world on it due to the popularity and success of the old FH which had been a trucking icon for 19 years. At the launch of the new FH, it quickly became apparent it only had one thing in common with its predecessor, being something entirely new. The new truck was jammed with ground-breaking features, the majority being firsts for the industry. Again, the design focused on driver comfort. This was due to the high demand for decent drivers. The new FH had 1 extra cubic meter of space within the cab and handling which was as close to a car as you could get. Several comfort features were added including a revamped climate system called I-ParkCool. This was more of an office than a cab. A Luxury which Haulage drivers had never experienced. Volvo went onto introduce 4 more models to the uk over the coming years, FM, FMX, FE, FL.
With technologies advancing at an incredible rate it’s only a matter of time until trucking gets revolutionised again and I’m sure Volvo will be at the forefront of it.
